"From Weimar, the city of poets, there streamed sunlight into my poet's life".
This is how Hans Christian Andersen described the impact of literary Weimar. Over the centuries the cultural centre, mainly formed by the work of Goethe, Schiller, Wieland and Herder, has kept on attracting writers such as Thomas Mann, Franz Kafka or the Russian author Ivan Turgenjew.
However, Weimar was not only the city of poets.
Already in 1708, when Johann Sebastian Bach took over the position of a court organist here, a long tradition of music had been founded.
In the second half of the 19th century, for Weimar began a new glittering period in its history called the "Silver Age". This new cultural upswing was due to the activities of Franz Liszt. A large circle of admirers, friends and students came to Weimar because of him or inspired by his work - among them Richard Wagner, Johannes Brahms, Bedrich Smetana, Hector Berlioz and Richard Strauss.
Today at the "Franz Liszt Conservatory of Music", new artists are educated who take his legacy into future.
As ever, Weimar, the city of literature and music, attracts guests from all over the world.
