Erected in 1770, the baroque archive was converted into the residence of the ducal family for 28 years after the castle burnt down in 1774. The renamed "Ducal Palace" later gave shelter to the "Free Drawing School", founded by Goethe, served as a seat of government in 1918 and was domicile of the Thuringian state parliament. Since 1951, it has housed the "Franz Liszt Conservatory of Music".
